Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream in Light | Review.

The SmashboxCamera Ready BB Cream in Light ($44, available here) is a product that I’ve been wanting to try for some time mainly because Smashbox is a brand well-known for its camera-ready makeup products. If you have been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that foundation is my favourite type of face makeup and I get absurdly excited by complexion products. This may sound incredibly weird, but I seriously find creating a flawless base for the rest of your makeup highly therapeutic!

This is actually my very first BB cream product ever because I wasn’t convinced by the explosion of BB/CC/DD creams (whether the Korean, or Western ones) and their claims. Let’s face it, with all the complexion-enhancing products out there, any addition or potential “wishlist” item can easily break the budget. As someone who prefers full-coverage, flawless complexion products, BB creams have never been on top of my list. They are typically touted as being sheerer and lighter than most foundations, so it wasn’t the finish that I usually look for. Just like other BB creams, the Smashbox one claims to be a “five-in-one formula for achieving flawless skin on camera and beyond.”

The shade “Light” (the second lightest shade) matches my NC25 skintone perfectly. One of the benefits of BB creams is that it tends to oxidize to match your individual skintone (hence why there are only a few shades in the range). There are a total of 5 shades in the entire range and the shades tend to run darker based on a few reviews I’ve read online, so be sure to do a comparison shade before purchasing. I would not have guessed that the shade “Light” was my shade match at all, but the yellow tone really matches the yellow undertone on my skin. If you find the shade to be slightly off, you can mix it up with your existing foundation or BB cream and still get away with it.

I have normal skin so I didn’t benefit very much from the oil-controlling properties. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much coverage the BB cream provides – there’s sufficient pigmentation to deliver a light-medium coverage. I find the coverage to be buildable as well, so I was able to get an almost full-coverage on my skin without looking cakey. I use a dime-sized amount when I’m having good days, and twice that amount for bad days when I need extra coverage.

The finish is absolutely gorgeous: semi-matte, radiant, and natural-looking, as expected from a product with this kind of price tag. With this BB cream, I don’t even need to use pressed powder to mattify my skin. It doesn’t get stuck or dry over any dry spots and I can foresee myself forgoing the full-coverage foundation (quelle horreur!) which is something that rarely happens. I used this BB cream on one of my worst skin days and with a little bit of concealer, my skin still looked amazing and flawless.

If you are new to the whole BB/CC/DD cream face products, the SmashboxCamera Ready BB Cream in Light is one that I would recommend you trying first as it made me a convert! This is probably one of the best complexion products I’ve tried from Smashbox. The quality, finish, perfect shade match were decidedly its best features, and combination could be hard to find elsewhere! I would not have guessed that the shade “Light” was my shade match at all, but the yellow tone really matches the yellow undertone on my skin. There’s sufficient pigmentation to deliver a light-medium coverage. I find the coverage to be buildable as well. If you are willing to make the investment, this could be a game-changer for you as it was for me! This BB cream is definitely on the higher-end of the price spectrum and may not be something for everyone particularly with this kind of price tag, so be sure to shop around for the shades (ask for samples!) if you are unsure!

I have never tried it, but it looks really great on you. BB creams tend to be too dark for me, but this looks pretty pale (yay!). Also, I’m curious about the oil-controlling properties… Great review!

Thanks Natalie ???? For my very first BB cream, this stuff has really impressed me and is slowly getting up to the HG status ????

This BB cream looks great! I’ve heard a lot of good things about it, but I haven’t invested in one yet because like you said, I’m still not sure about the hype. I’ve tried a few lower end ones, but the results weren’t great. I’ll keep this one in mind ????

It’s far pricier than I am comfortable with spending, but this was one of the reasons I bought the set from Sephora a while ago! It was pricey but absolutely worth it in terms of the products that I was able to try and play around with ????

That looks really good! I wish there was a larger colour selection though.
