There are those days, an interview, a gala/formal event, a wedding where you are the bridesmaid or just another very important day, when you know you cannot screw things up. The last thing you want to be worrying about on those days would your makeup. But of course, those days tend to be when disasters strike. Running out of your favourite foundation. Goopy mascara. Powder that pills. AMIRITE?!
Contrary to how it should be done, I find myself testing out new products, which I’ve had no experience with, during these special occasions. It’s a terrible habit because I end up with those dreaded foundation line, or clumpy mascara. When I need to look extra, extra polished, and pulled together, here are my arsenal of fool-proof, guaranteed to be mess-up free products for when I need to look my best!
The most critical part to my routine is the holy trinity of complexion products. To start out, I love using Make Up For EverHD Primer ($39, available here) which has a more liquid/water-like texture so it doesn’t feel like it just sits on top of the skin. I’ve written up about this primer range before, but the skinny is that: there are 7 options available in the range, each primer addressing different needs (i.e. dull skin, etc) and the water-like texture makes it feel more like a moisturizer than a primer.
I follow up with my favourite foundation for delivering that skin-like finish with a healthy/radiant glow, the DiorStar Foundation ($50, available here). Dubbed as the “selfie” foundation, I trust this staple foundation to deliver when it comes to flash photography. To cover up any spots or under-eye circles, I use the MACPro Longwear concealer ($22, available here). It’s an industry staple, and for a good reason too – the high coverage, travel-friendly format and ease of blendability makes it a purse-friendly addition and staple for long nights.
Finishing off the base, I use the GuerlainMeteorites Compact Light Revealing Powder ($71, Sephora.ca) which I pretty much consider to be my Photoshop powder. It by far, outperforms the often-raved about Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder, despite costing a little bit more. The luxe compact is the perfect addition to any vanity.
I can easily skip out the eyeshadow as long as I’ve got my eyeliner and mascara game on. My favourite combination to achieve that very simplistic look are the StilaAll Day Waterproof Eyeliner ($26, available here), and the Too FacedBetter than Sex Mascara ($30, available here). I’ve talked about both of these products so much on the blog, but both products have been the ones I reach out most when it comes to long days at the office or when I am heading out for the night and need to look extra, extra polished. If it can withstand 10+ hours workdays, and a kickboxing session, I am sure it can handle a formal event!
To pull the look together, I use a coat of the GuerlainLa Lacque Couleur in Baby Rose ($29, sephora.ca). Despite the price tag, the chip-proof formula, glossy shine and that it is the perfect French manicure shade makes this a staple to keep for formal events!
Now it’s your turn! Have you tried any of the products featured here? What are your must-have products for impoant occasions? As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Share with me comment section or through Twitter or Instagram!

Definitely and continues to be one of my favourites!
Oh my gosh, I also decide to test all my random makeup bits when I have some sort of special occasion. It’s AWFUL. I always end up looking like a drowned rat. I love all of your picks, BTW. I should really figure out what my fool-proof essentials are…
Thanks Natalie ???? I do this to remind myself that I don’t need to constantly buy the new “it” makeup of the moment!
The Dior Star foundation is easily one of my new faves. I bought the Guerlain powder on your recommendation and use it every day!
