It seems incredibly silly to write a “how-to” shop your stash when it all really is, is going through your (gargantuan) makeup drawer. I thought it was the logical follow up to an earlier post I wrote about the importance of shopping your stash and I figured I might as well share some of what I do to go through the expensive makeup sitting in my drawer right now.
I’m really looking forward to your comments on this post because I want to know how to better shop my stash!
1. Spend time Going Through Your Makeup Stash
Once a month, I try to go through all my makeup and stash – this includes sanitizing my makeup and going through my MALM drawer which houses the rest of my stash. This gives me a good idea of what I already have and what I need to repurchase. There have been so many occasions where I literally have bought 2-3 of the same thing because I didn’t realize I already have it at home. This is a good way to mentally keep track of that expensive pile of makeup you have going. I also look at it as a form of accountability – it tells me that I don’t need to grow this pile!
2. Have a Regular Clean Out
This is one of the hardest things I have to do. Just like the regular spring cleaning with clothes, I sift through all my makeup every other month. When I see something that I haven’t used more than once, it has to go. Whether it’s the blog sale pile or trash can, I feel that the product can be better used and taken care of without me.

3. Keep Track of What’s Already Opened and What’s been Tested
I’m a germaphobe and I am overly OCD when it comes to products expiry dates. The way I keep track of what’s been used and what hasn’t is to keep the unused products in their respective packaging/box which not only helps keep my stash organized, but prevent two identical products being opened at the same time.
4. Regularly Rotate Your Makeup
This is one that I don’t do well in. I always try to finish a product first before opening another one so I rarely have multiple foundations opened at the same time. Some exception applies to this of course (i.e. blush and lipstick), but the general rule of thumb for me is to keep only 2 products within the same category open at the same time. This helps me get through the products faster (who wants to be using a foundation that’s been opened for 6 months?) and leaves little opportunity to having to throw out products due to exposure!
Now it’s your turn! Do you shop your stash? What’s your favourite way to ensure your stash gets all the love it deserves? As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Share with me comment section or through Twitter or Instagram!
Wow you’re so discipined! I bought some labels and now I put the last used date on an item that I rotate out of my daily products so then I know how old they are. Other than that, I rarely shop my stash, which is bad b/c I keep adding to it!
