Urban Decay Ammo Palette.

The Urban DecayUrban Ammo Palette ($40, available here) is a 10-piece palette consisting of Urban Decay’s best-selling eyeshadows. The one that I currently have is the older version and does not come with a primer. It’s been a while since I’ve been tempted by a palette, particularly as this palette is relatively old and has been around for some time now. I’ve seen it in a couple of YouTube videos when I first ventured into the makeup world, and has always flinched at the price tag.

The slim and compact size of the palette makes it perfect for travelling or even packed in your bag; the magnet is strong so the lid is always secured in place. The packaging is very sturdy, durable and I’m never afraid to damage the eyeshadows when storing it or packing it for travel. The outer case is designed in a very classical Urban Decay way with its signature “grunge” black and purple design. The shade selection contained in this palette makes is a versatile and well-rounded palette one can easily achieve a subtle, or sexy look with any combinations of these ten eyeshadows.

At 0.03oz/eyeshadow, the size is very generous compared to the 0.05oz/eyeshadow in a regular pot form which retails for $22. At $40 for the entire palette, the price is perfect for bargain hunters.

The first picture shows the eyeshadows swatched once without primer/base underneath whereas I used the Urban Decay Primer Potion to swatch the second picture. I believe this palette still has the old formulation which means that texture and pigmentation aren’t necessarily its strong points.

I have really fallen in love with three shades, and used them regularly for everyday looks: Sin, Last Call and Polyester Bride. In the look that I am about to show you, I have paired for Sin and Last Call for a neutral, subtle everyday eye makeup that does not use any shade of browns. As for Polyester Bride, I have found the perfect technique to use it for: apply Polyester Bride over a dark lid colour if you’re going for a smokey eye and it will give you the most beautiful metallic sheen to the lid colour. I have tried it with my favourite eyeshadows and found the glittery effect to enhance the eyeshadows in the most natural and beautiful way.

While most eyeshadows swatched well and the colour appears fairly intense, I find the texture to be less than perfect, particularly with the lighter shades. I had a hard time working with Grifter and Polyester Bride, which are two shades that often receive criticism for their chalky texture and lack of pigmentation. However, I think with the right eyeshadow primer, the eyeshadows will work fine for everyday use.

Although the texture and pigmentation come off a little short in terms of my expectations, I do find that with the right product (primer, and/or technique), one can easily make these product work more effectively. With the current price tag, I find it to be a worthwhile investment and recommend this palette for its versatility, functionality and overall being a reasonable quality palette from Urban Decay that includes some of the most popular shades from the range.
