A good, versatile, functional day bag is a staple in every woman’s closet. The Prada Saffiano Lux Tote ($2350, available here) is that bag for me. Look up any top ten must-have designer bags on Google, and you’ll likely be encouraged to invest in that traditional-coloured, versatile day bag. Whether you are a CHANEL, Louis Vuitton or Gucci kind of girl, I think how the bag works for you trumps the brand-name. Afterall, if you are going to be spending that kind of money, you want to get as much wear out of it as possible.
I have been obsessed with this bag for months now, after seeing countless “imitations” from mid-tier designers like Michael Kors and Tory Burch. Wandering around Holt Renfrew’s handbag section can do that to you. I was really taken by Ms. Burch’s Robinson Double Zip Tote, in the camel colour, which retailed for around $700 at Holt Renfrew. However, upon discovering that the bag was Made in China, and was somewhat of an imitation to the Prada one, I was left feeling indignant at having to pay that kind of money (no offence, but wouldn’t you want something stamped “Made in Italy” or “Made in France” with that kind of price tag?)
Why I Love the Prada Saffiano Lux Tote
The saffiano leather is also one of my favourite types of leather. My other recent bag purchase was the Michael Kors Saffiano Fulton Crossbody bag which features the same type of material. I’m a huge fan of saffiano leather because it is 1) durable, 2) looks elegant and chic, and 3) low-maintenance. Saffiano leather is a treated material, embossed with the cross hatch pattern that makes it so distinctive. The treated material makes the leather virtually scratch-resistant, waterproof, and easy to clean. I won’t lie, I had a little bit of a heart attack when I spilled coffee on my way to work carrying this bag. However, it was quickly cleaned with a little bit of water and a clean cloth.
The Saffiano Lux Tote comes in three sizes, and I own largest once, which measures at 33.0 x 23.5 x 14.5cm. On my 5’5 frame, the bag doesn’t overwhelm my frame, and fits everything I need. The tote features 3 pockets, two on the outside with zipper closure and one in the middle (with two button clasps on the end to secure the middle pocket). The structured shape of the bag makes it so elegant and sophisticated to look at and wear. Certainly, this will be a bag that will look as lovely in 5-10 years as it does today.
The tote can be styled formally and informally, and worn two ways. When it’s more of a formal occasion (i.e. an interview or a fancy gala/dinner) I carry this using leather handles. On the more casual/informal setting, I use the adjustable shoulder strap.
Beyond choosing the kind of bag you want, the colour is also another important decision. The Prada Saffiano Lux Tote Argilla (or Clay Grey as it is known in Canada) was my compromise as I did not want to purchase a black-coloured bag (boring!) nor a bold colour (I might regret it in a couple of years). The decision came down to this shade and the blush pink colour. As lovely as the blush pink shade, I realized that it might be harder to clean than this one, and is probably a colour I will grow out of in 5 years’ time.
