One of the exciting launches of the Essence Spring / Summer 2017 launches is the Essence Cosmetics Matt Matt Matt Lipstick ($4.49, Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique | available here). Available in 8 vibrant shades and costing less than $5 it was a pretty exciting new product to get excited about. It can be difficult to get a matte lipstick formula right so I hoped that essence wasn’t going to cut corners. I am ready to be impressed!
From the collection, I received 6 shades from the launch and was keen to put all of these to the test. The collection seems to lean heavily towards red and purple shades, so if you are a fan of these type of colours, you’ll want to check them out in-store!
Essence Cosmetics Matt Matt Matt Lipstick
The Essence Cosmetics Matt Matt Matt Lipstick formula has a lightweight though it does feel a little dry and waxy. It’s not going to give you the same kind of comfort as a $30-40 type of lipstick so it can be forgiven slightly for these drawbacks. I think this lipstick is an impressive formula regardless, especially for a drugstore brand.
The lipsticks have a fairly creamy texture that glides and applies easily on the lips. One stroke is sufficient to get a full opaque colour payoff. Across all six colours, the formula is consistently even though I find the lighter colours to wear and apply a lot better than the darker shades. There is a slight lipstick-y smell and taste to these.
The lasting power is quite decent, 3 hours or so if you’re not eating or drinking. I personally find the formula to require a bit more work than other lipsticks I’m used to so I often apply some lip balm underneath to make it more comfortable. It also stains your lip slightly as the colour wears off. There is a great variety of reds and purples that I’ve gotten to try out – I quite enjoy the variety and only wished there were more nude colours in the collection.
These lipsticks have a very similar packaging to an old Maybelline lipstick range that was launched a few years ago. I find these lipsticks to be a fantastic value for money and personally I’d get a lot more use out of these on a daily basis if they were a little bit more low maintenance and don’t stain. With this formula, I often reserve them for when I don’t need to stay out for too long!
